Ellen DeGeneres faces criticism over donation to late producer Matt Wright as family shares heartbreaking new update
Developed over time first seen 2 hours ago
Ellen DeGeneres has faced criticism from some social media users after donating $5,000 to a fundraiser for the family of her late producer, Matthew Wright. Others defended the contribution, saying it was a substantial gift and that DeGeneres was not responsible for covering the family’s costs.
Wright, 52, worked on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and the “Jennifer Hudson Show”. His family said he died suddenly but peacefully in his sleep last Friday; the fundraiser aims to help bring his body from California to New York. DeGeneres paid tribute to him online, describing him as kind, smart and much loved.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A $5,000 donation is a substantial personal contribution, and DeGeneres was not responsible for paying the family’s costs. Her public tribute also recognised Wright’s work and character, while the fundraiser allows others to contribute according to their means.
The case against
Because DeGeneres is a wealthy public figure who worked with Wright, some may feel that a larger contribution would better match her means and their professional connection. They may also see public scrutiny as reasonable when a fundraiser for a grieving family highlights the gap between a celebrity’s resources and the amount given.
