Lakers’ new big man accepts JJ Redick’s challenge, takes team to new heights
Walker Kessler has responded to Lakers coach JJ Redick’s challenge to improve his rebounding, producing three consecutive double-doubles after starting the season without a double-digit rebound game. His work in the paint is a major part of the Lakers’ strong start, offering rim protection and helping their perimeter defenders play more aggressively.
Kessler is averaging 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks as the 7-2 Lakers sit second in the Western Conference. Their defensive rating is 110.1 with him on court and 117.2 when he is off; he also ranks third in the league for blocks and leads qualifying defenders in limiting shots within six feet, with opponents making 45.1 per cent. Acquired from Utah in July for two first-round picks and two pick swaps, he is still returning from shoulder surgery and adjusting to a team with nine new players.
In short
- Kessler answered Redick’s rebounding challenge with three straight double-doubles.
- The Lakers defend better with him on court.
- He is still recovering and adapting after joining from Utah.
