Bernie Sanders thinks Medicare-for-all bill could pass, ‘not absolutely certain’ Trump would veto
Bernie Sanders said he was not certain Donald Trump would veto a Medicare-for-all bill, arguing that Trump might support it if he saw broad public backing. Sanders said Democrats should pass the legislation to demonstrate that they are addressing what he called a broken health-care system, regardless of whether Trump ultimately signs it.
Sanders cited polling that he said showed support from more than 60% of Americans and 80–90% of Democrats. His comments followed Democratic victories that returned control of both the House and Senate to the party. Commentator Jonathan Alpert argued that Sanders was also appealing to Trump’s political instincts and ego; the White House was contacted for comment.
In short
- Sanders says Trump might sign Medicare-for-all.
- He argues Democrats should pass the bill regardless.
