Richard Lloyd, Television Guitarist, Dead at 75
Richard Lloyd, co-founding guitarist of Television and a key figure in New York’s 1970s punk scene, has died aged 75. His inventive playing helped shape post-punk guitar music, and his career also included nine solo albums and recordings with other artists.
Lloyd had said in August that he had cholangiocarcinoma, a serious bile duct cancer; he died at home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Saturday morning, according to Rolling Stone. He joined Television in 1973 alongside Tom Verlaine, Richard Hell and Billy Ficca, and played on the band’s influential 1977 debut, *Marquee Moon*. Television released two albums during its first run, from 1973 to 1978, and later reunited; Lloyd left in 2007. His solo work included *Field of Fire* (1986) and *The Countdown* (2018), and he also played on Matthew Sweet’s *Girlfriend*.
