One of the Most Outrageous Zombie Movies Ever Made Officially Arrives on Streaming

The 1985 horror comedy *The Return of the Living Dead* arrived on Prime Video in the United States on 1 November 2026. Its mix of punk rock, practical effects and humour helped make it a cult film, while its unusual, fast-moving zombies set it apart from more familiar undead stories.

Written and directed by Dan O’Bannon, the film follows warehouse employees who accidentally release a military chemical that revives the dead. The zombies can talk, think and run, and are driven to eat human brains; the outbreak draws workers, punks and bystanders into a fight for survival. Made for about $4 million, it earned more than $14.2 million at the box office and has Rotten Tomatoes scores of 71% from critics and 80% from audiences.
