Christopher Nolan On DGA “Holding The Studios To Account” In Protecting Copyright From AI, Including Anti-AI Boilerplate In ‘The Odyssey’
Christopher Nolan says studios must take responsibility for protecting films from being copied or used to train AI systems, since directors generally do not own the copyrights to the films they make. As president of the Directors Guild of America, he says the Guild is pressing studios to safeguard those rights and ensure creators benefit from the value of their work.
Nolan welcomed a legal notice in his film The Odyssey stating it cannot be ingested as AI training data. He argued that companies should not use “AI” as a catch-all excuse to avoid accountability, and said he believes reliance on fair-use claims will not hold up in court over the longer term. He was elected DGA president last September after serving on its Artificial Intelligence Committee.
In short
- Nolan wants studios to protect films from AI training use.
- The Odyssey includes a notice against AI training.
- The DGA says creators’ income depends on copyright value.
