Nandy confirms Erasmus+ scheme return as UK eyes closer ties with EU
The UK will rejoin the Erasmus+ exchange programme in January, allowing students and young people to study, train or gain work experience in the EU. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the return after six years away would help rebuild ties with European neighbours and widen access to international opportunities.
Britain left Erasmus+ in 2020 under Boris Johnson’s Brexit agreement and replaced it with the Turing Scheme, which has now ended. The Government says up to £400 million will support schools, youth groups and sports teams, and a 30% reduction in participation fees for 2027 will save about £240 million. Applications are due to open later this month, with more than 100,000 people expected to benefit; the Conservatives criticised the announcement’s timing and cost.
In short
