Elvis and Eminem rights holders are suing Suno
Rights holders of Elvis Presley’s music and the publisher of some of Eminem’s biggest records are suing AI music company Suno, alleging it generates music and lyrics that imitate the artists without permission. The cases raise questions about how AI music services may use artists’ identities and work, including whether voice cloning breaches Tennessee law.
The Presley rights holders argue Suno violates Tennessee’s ELVIS Act, which bars AI companies from cloning a singer’s voice. The lawsuits resemble a case brought by Jason Isbell and others in September, which alleged imitation but did not directly claim copyright infringement. Suno says it aims to help users create original music, bars prompts naming specific artists or songs and screens uploaded audio and lyrics; it is also facing cases from Sony, UMG, Reservoir Media and others.
