Extraction shooters need a PvE mode for casual players—so what’s the controversy?
The article argues that extraction shooters should offer a dedicated PvE option for players who want a more relaxed, cooperative experience. It says this choice need not undermine PvP, and could make the increasingly popular genre more welcoming to people who would otherwise avoid or leave it.
In an Embark survey cited in the article, 37 per cent of ARC Raiders players focused on PvE cooperation, 34 per cent on PvP, and 27 per cent on both; more than 51 per cent expressed interest in a dedicated PvE mode. The article also points to an Activision test in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: after skill constraints were loosened for half the players for a month, the top 10 per cent returned more often, while the other 90 per cent were considerably less likely to return.
In short
- Many ARC Raiders players want a dedicated PvE mode.
- The article says PvE could attract players without taking away from PvP.
- Looser matchmaking in a Call of Duty test saw most affected players return less.
