Former PlayStation Boss Says Sony Doesn’t Need a ‘PS6 for $1,200,’ It Needs a ‘PS5 for $300’
Former Sony Interactive Entertainment America chief Shawn Layden argues that Sony should make a cheaper PS5 rather than pursue a much more expensive PS6. He says the current console has enough power for the games people want, and that making hardware smaller and more affordable would be a more meaningful innovation than adding performance.
The PS5 launched in 2020 at $499 with a disc drive and $399 as a Digital Edition; Sony’s current prices are $649, $599 and $899 for the Pro. Layden pointed to the PS2’s price falling to $99 late in its life, and urged Sony to reduce the PS5’s cost. The PS6 launch timing and price remain uncertain, with reports suggesting it could arrive in 2028 or 2029 rather than 2027.
In short
- Shawn Layden wants Sony to make a cheaper PS5.
