The Star Trek franchise has experienced multiple television cancellations in recent years, with Lower Decks becoming one of the latest casualties. After five seasons and fifty episodes, the comedy-focused series concluded in 2024 when Paramount+ decided not to renew it for additional seasons.

The show's creator, Mike McMahan, has since disclosed that he possessed sufficient creative material for at least two additional seasons. Through social media, McMahan outlined the unrealized storylines that would have continued the series, including exploration of previously unvisited galactic regions, expanded storylines involving specific characters, and additional special episodes set within the fictional holodeck environment.
