Trump labels Iran ‘a bunch of scum’, says ceasefire ‘is over’ and admits he’s been ‘lucky’ not to have been assassinated

At a NATO summit in Ankara, US President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire with Iran was "over" and branded the country's leaders "a bunch of scum", after the US and Iran exchanged military strikes overnight. The remarks matter because they signal a fresh escalation in the conflict between Washington and Tehran, with the president suggesting he no longer wishes to deal with Iran at all.

During what was described as an extraordinary press conference, Trump also renewed his demand to take control of Greenland, criticised NATO allies, and threatened to cut off all trade with Spain over its refusal to meet the alliance's new 5 per cent of GDP defence spending target. He additionally rebuked the UK, Italy and others for a perceived lack of support during the Iran conflict. US Central Command said it had struck more than 80 Iranian targets, including over 60 Revolutionary Guard small boats, while Iran said it had retaliated against US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.
