Galway Mayor Helen Ogbu is facing renewed scrutiny over a false claim that she moved to Ireland in 2006 seeking safety after her husband's murder, an account her party, Labour, has repeatedly dismissed as an inadvertent website error. Newly emerged evidence shows Ms Ogbu shared a Nigerian news report repeating the same false claim at least a month before the website went live, undermining the explanation that she and the party only recently became aware of the mistake. The discrepancy raises fresh questions for Labour leader Ivana Bacik about the party's handling of the matter.

The website had stated that Ms Ogbu and her family moved to Ireland in 2006 after the loss of her husband, but in fact her husband was murdered in Nigeria in 2010 and she arrived in Ireland in 2005. On 11 February 2025, Ms Ogbu shared a report from Channels Television on her personal YouTube channel stating that she had fled to Ireland in 2005 after her husband was murdered. When questioned, a Labour spokeswoman said neither the party nor Ms Ogbu had spoken to the channel and suggested the outlet be asked about its sources, while maintaining that both had only recently learned of the website error.
