D&D unveils new Arcana Unleashed book, which includes the first real testing ground for 5.5e
Wizards of the Coast has revealed Arcana Unleashed, the newest mainline product for the latest edition of Dungeons & Dragons, now officially branded 5.5e. The release marks the return of the large adventure campaigns that were a hallmark of 5e and helped make it the most popular edition in the game's history, something notably absent from 5.5e until now. It arrives as part of the "Season of Magic" and is significant because it represents the edition's first genuine attempt to recapture the appeal of those big campaign books, at a time when the designers concede 5.5e is still finding its identity.
The line comprises a core Arcana Unleashed book focused on high magic — offering 8 subclasses, 33 spells, 19 creatures, 47 magical items, 9 arcane factions, 10 backgrounds and a level 1 introductory adventure — alongside Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, a 128-page adventure for characters at levels 11–20. Themed as a "magical spy thriller," Deadfall is set in Thay and culminates in a confrontation with its immortal lich ruler, Szass Tam, though at half the roughly 250–300 pages of 5e classics such as Curse of Strahd. The products can be bought separately or bundled, with preorders open on D&D Beyond and an official release date of 15 September 2026; the new rules can also be previewed in the second season of the actual-play show Dungeon Masters, which began airing on 8 July.
