Irish police, An Garda Síochána, discovered her body on Tuesday 7 July and have launched a murder investigation, saying a person of interest fled the country in the early hours of that morning, before her body was found. The case matters because it has triggered an international police effort and drawn attention from the US State Department, which is providing consular support to her family.

Carney had moved to Ireland from Westchester County, New York, in 2021 with her young daughter. Irish media outlets, including the Irish Mirror, report that the person of interest is an asylum seeker who had been living in state-run accommodation in Killarney, previously lived in France and the UK, knew Carney well and often stayed at her home, and is alleged to have fled to Turkey. Her social media described her as a "New Yorker in Ireland" and featured a man she called her partner, though police have not formally identified the person of interest or confirmed whether he is that man.
