Republican concerns centre on China's military expansion, its support for Iran, human rights violations against Uyghurs, and competition in artificial intelligence—an area where Taiwan's dominance is critical, as TSMC produces approximately 90 per cent of the world's advanced semiconductors used in AI systems and military technology. Trump previously expressed scepticism about a proposed $14 billion military aid package for Taiwan when Xi lobbied him against it during a Beijing visit in May; Republican senators led by Mitch McConnell are now urging him to approve both this package and spend an additional $1.3 billion in already-approved funds before they expire at month's end. Some officials within Trump's administration have privately questioned whether the extravagant ceremonial welcome will advance US strategic objectives.
