Hong Kong film producer Nansun Shi has died aged 75, according to a statement from Film Workshop, the company she co-founded with director-producer Tsui Hark. Shi was a major figure in Hong Kong cinema, helping shape its 1980s golden era and later contributing to its revival in the early 2000s, most notably as a producer on the first Infernal Affairs film. Her death matters because she played a central role in bringing Hong Kong filmmaking to wider international attention and helped build the industry’s production and distribution infrastructure.

Film Workshop said Shi died peacefully at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital on 13 July 2026 after a decline in health since 2022 caused by immune system complications and recurrent infections leading to multiple organ dysfunction. Her career spanned television, Cinema City and Film Workshop, where she worked on or helped produce influential titles including A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, Once Upon a Time in China and Time and Tide. She later joined Media Asia Group in 2002 as vice president and worked on Infernal Affairs, which was later remade by Martin Scorsese as The Departed, while her most recent credit was Tsui Hark’s 2025 hit Legend Of The Condor Heroes: The Gallants.
