Bungie announces new Marathon PvE mode, an experimental roguelite

Polygon ·

Bungie will add Vault Breaker, an experimental roguelite PvE mode, to Marathon in a mid-season update on 21 July. The mode is intended to broaden the extraction shooter’s activities while the studio’s future depends heavily on Marathon following Destiny 2’s development wind-down and recent layoffs.

Players can enter the Cryo Archive alone, in pairs or in trios, tackling increasingly difficult vaults over multiple runs. They will earn Vault Data to improve Sponsored Kits or buy equipment usable elsewhere on Tau Ceti; Vault Breaker runs until 4 August, while Marathon’s fuller PvE mode is planned for season three.

In short

  • Marathon receives a limited-time roguelite PvE mode on 21 July.
  • Vault Breaker supports solo, duo and three-player runs.
  • A full PvE mode is planned for season three.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Vault Breaker could give Marathon players a welcome way to explore its world and progression without centring every session on player-versus-player combat. Its escalating vaults, flexible group sizes and rewards usable elsewhere may make it an accessible experiment that broadens the game while the studio develops a fuller PvE mode.

The case against

A limited-time roguelite may not meet players’ expectations for a substantial PvE activity, particularly when the fuller mode is still planned for a later season. Because its rewards also improve kits or provide equipment for use elsewhere, players may question whether the experiment offers enough standalone value or mainly supports the existing extraction loop.

Explained simply

Marathon is a video game being developed by Bungie, the studio known for creating the popular Destiny 2 franchise. As Destiny 2 winds down and Bungie has recently conducted layoffs, Marathon has become crucial to the studio's future plans.

Bungie is adding an experimental game mode called Vault Breaker to Marathon to expand its range of activities. Vault Breaker is a roguelite mode, where players tackle progressively harder challenges across multiple runs, earning rewards that improve their equipment and abilities for future attempts.

Players can play Vault Breaker solo or in groups, working together against computer opponents in a cooperative format rather than competing against each other. This type of collaborative gameplay is part of Bungie's plan to offer more varied activities in Marathon.
