GTA 6 Predicted to Make Up to $5.2 Billion in Sales by End of Launch Week After Securing an Estimated $260 Million via Preorders
Analyst firm Newzoo estimates that Grand Theft Auto 6 generated about $260 million in worldwide digital preorders during its first week, and predicts launch-week sales of between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion. If realised, the figures would make the game one of the largest commercial entertainment launches ever and underline the exceptional demand for Rockstar’s long-awaited sequel.
The estimate is based on $180 million in digital preorders across the United States and five major European markets after preorders opened on 25 June, extrapolated using GTA 5’s regional player distribution. Newzoo rejected online claims that the game had already reached $1 billion in preorders, while noting that GTA 5 made $1 billion within three days of its 2013 release; GTA 6 is due for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 19 November 2026.
In short
- GTA 6 preorders are estimated at $260 million worldwide in one week.
- Newzoo forecasts up to $5.2 billion in launch-week sales.
- Analysts dismiss claims of $1 billion already earned through preorders.
Explained simply
Grand Theft Auto 6 is the upcoming sequel to one of the most commercially successful video games ever made. Developed by Rockstar Games, the game is one of the most highly anticipated entertainment releases of the year.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise is known for its detailed open-world cities where players engage in a variety of activities, including criminal ones. GTA 5, released in 2013, became a record-breaking commercial success and remains enormously popular over a decade later, making expectations for its sequel particularly high.
Preorder figures serve as an early indicator of consumer demand for major entertainment releases. For an expensive, highly anticipated product like GTA 6, analysts' forecasts matter because they help the industry gauge the scale of commercial appetite for the game and assess whether its launch might be historically significant.
