In the late 1990s, Thomas Haden Church faced a significant professional choice when offered concurrent opportunities in two major productions. One was a supporting role in Steven Spielberg's World War II drama Saving Private Ryan. The other was a lead position in Free Money, a comedy that would reunite him with Marlon Brando and Charlie Sheen on location in Quebec. Church ultimately decided to pursue the latter, viewing a direct collaboration with one of cinema's most revered performers as an exceptional and fleeting opportunity that superseded a Spielberg vehicle.

Though Free Money subsequently underperformed commercially and critically whilst Saving Private Ryan became an enduring classic, Church maintains no regrets about his decision. He spent approximately three months working with Brando during what became the veteran actor's penultimate film role, describing the experience as remarkable and beyond value for his career development. Spielberg apparently shared no hard feelings, reportedly telling Church years later that he himself would have prioritised working with Brando over his own direction.
