Police in Edmond, Oklahoma, have arrested an 11-year-old girl on suspicion of fatally shooting her 15-year-old brother, after she reportedly called their mother to falsely claim someone else had shot him inside their family home. The mother was not at the property at the time of the shooting on Wednesday afternoon, and officers who responded found the teenage boy dead from an apparent gunshot wound, with his sister believed to be the only other person in the house. The case has shocked the family's neighbours, who described the siblings as close and the household as an unlikely setting for such a tragedy.

Officers were called to the home at around 4pm on Wednesday and the girl was arrested shortly before 1am the following day on a complaint of second-degree murder, though no formal charge has yet been filed by the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office. Police have not disclosed what they believe led to the shooting, and the children's identities have not been released due to their ages. Because Oklahoma law bars children under 13 from being charged as adults with felonies, the case will proceed through the juvenile court system rather than as an adult murder trial.
