‘A gobal political awakening’: how gen Z protests are sweeping the world
Young people are helping drive a wave of protests and political organising across the world, challenging authoritarianism and influencing elections. Researchers have identified at least 25 protests involving people aged roughly 14 to 29, suggesting a broader shift in how this generation engages with politics.
The movements have different aims, including opposing corruption and political inequality and seeking better education, housing and climate action. In Bangladesh, student protests that began over a quota law widened into opposition to the government, and Sheikh Hasina resigned in 2024. In Serbia, students helped end the ruling party’s 14-year tenure, while in Brazil, online organising and pro-Lula rallies helped build momentum for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s election victory.
In short
- Gen Z is shaping protests and elections across several countries.
- Researchers have identified at least 25 youth-involved protests.
- Social media is helping young people organise and amplify demands.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The protests can be seen as a legitimate response to institutions that many young people feel have failed to address corruption, inequality and basic needs such as education and housing. Youth-led organising has widened public participation and, in some cases, helped bring political change, giving a generation with a direct stake in the future a stronger voice.
The case against
Even when grievances are genuine, protests that bring down governments or reshape elections can unsettle institutions and leave uncertain what should replace them. Critics may also question whether fast-moving, loosely organised movements can sustain broad support or turn diverse demands into workable policies, while stressing that lasting change should come through accountable democratic processes.
