Rocky rejected the criticism, explaining that Rihanna wasn't featured on the record and only posted about it after it reached number one, arguing that earlier promotion would have led to accusations he only succeeded because of her support. He traced the tension with Drake back to around 2020, when he began dating Rihanna, saying he once considered Drake a friend but felt he started receiving subtle jabs after the relationship began.
