Man charged after Sydney CBD carjacking leaves pedestrian injured
Johnny Jose Starri, 36, from Adelaide, was arrested after allegedly carjacking a Mazda sedan in Sydney's CBD on Thursday evening and causing a dangerous incident. The stolen vehicle allegedly collided with a rideshare car, which then struck a parked police vehicle, and Starri then struck a female pedestrian. The incident occurred near the busy Queen Victoria Building where dozens of shoppers were present.
Police responded around 9pm after being called to King and Pitt Street following reports of a carjacking. Starri was arrested at the scene and charged with assault with intent to take/drive a motor vehicle, negligent driving, common assault and property damage. A woman in her 50s was struck and taken to hospital in stable condition, whilst the Mazda's owner and rideshare occupants were uninjured. Starri, known to police in South Australia, was refused bail at his bedside hospital hearing and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court next Wednesday.
