Canva brings free Affinity design tools to iPad
Canva has launched Affinity for iPad, bringing the creative suite’s vector design, photo editing, illustration and page layout tools to Apple’s tablet for free. The release extends last year’s relaunch of Affinity as a desktop app and gives iPad users tools designed for touchscreens and Apple Pencil.
The app adds Sketch Studio for drawing and turning rough sketches into cleaner shapes, and supports Apple Pencil Pro features including pressure sensitivity, tilt and hover. Projects can be saved together in Affinity’s .af format, and the app supports other major design file types. Core tools are free with a Canva account; optional AI features require Canva Pro, which starts at $18 a month.
In short
- Affinity’s core creative tools are now free on iPad.
- Sketch Studio supports sketching and sketch-to-vector work.
- Optional AI tools require Canva Pro from $18 a month.
Explained simply
Affinity is a set of tools for making and editing visual work, including illustrations, photographs and page layouts. Canva is a design company whose products include a widely used online design platform; it relaunched Affinity as a desktop app last year.
Designers use vector graphics to create artwork that can be resized without losing sharpness, and page layout tools to arrange text and images for documents. Bringing these tools to iPad gives users a touchscreen option, with Apple Pencil support for drawing and editing. The app’s free core tools and optional paid AI features also reflect Canva’s mix of free and subscription services.
