Sulaiman Tajzai, an 18-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years for the murder of Farmanullah Sherzad, 26, whom he stabbed to death in Westminster on 27 March. The judge described the attack as exceptionally violent and savage, with Tajzai stabbing his victim at least ten times in a premeditated killing that involved travelling over 150 miles from Leeds. Tajzai had developed a personal grudge against Sherzad, falsely believing him to be Taliban and acting in response to Sherzad's contact with Tajzai's cousin's wife.

Tajzai entered the UK in August 2022 claiming to be aged 14 and later claimed asylum. In October of the previous year, police had investigated allegations that Sherzad was stalking Tajzai's cousin's wife, though Sherzad claimed they were in a consensual relationship. After police decided to take no further action, Tajzai carried out reconnaissance in January and then travelled to London by train on 27 March, armed with a knife purchased near his home. CCTV footage documented his journey from King's Cross station to Sherzad's address, where he ambushed Sherzad as he cycled home from work. Forensic evidence, including DNA found on gloves dropped near St James' Park, linked Tajzai to the crime.
