The Resident Evil 2 remake has overtaken Resident Evil 5 as the best-selling entry in Capcom's survival horror franchise, ending a 15-year reign. According to newly released sales figures, the 2019 remake has now sold 19.75 million copies, narrowly surpassing Resident Evil 5's final total of 19.01 million, a milestone that highlights both how strong initial hype for Resident Evil 5 was and how well the series' back catalogue continues to perform.

Other recent Resident Evil releases are also selling strongly and could yet reclaim the top spot: the Resident Evil 4 remake has reached 16 million copies, while Resident Evil Requiem has sold 8 million since launch, with both expected to keep climbing. Across the whole franchise, Capcom says total sales now stand at 213 million, edging past Square Enix's Final Fantasy series at 212 million. Capcom also reported strong performances for Monster Hunter: World (30.45 million) and newer title Pragmata (2.51 million), with a Resident Evil film due on 16 September 2026 and Resident Evil Veronica planned for 2027.
