Andy Burnham has announced measures to crack down on "rip-offs" for UK consumers, including a ban on fake discounts and easier cancellation of unwanted subscriptions. While useful, Guardian consumer editor Hilary Osborne argues these changes are unlikely to match the financial impact of bigger reforms such as raising mandatory pension contributions or capping rents, but suggests six further everyday frustrations the government could also tackle.

Proposed fixes include banning hidden "transaction" or "processing" fees on event tickets now that pricing laws have made costs clearer but not fairer; stopping energy firms from raising direct debits when customers are already in credit, noting Ofgem data shows suppliers held £3.2bn of customer money in the year to March, with households £135 in credit on average; tackling "shrinkflation" by requiring clear "new pack size" labelling, as done in France and Austria; forcing companies to display a phone number on their homepage so customers can get help; and bringing forward plans to improve parking, including issues around electric vehicle charging fines and debt.
