Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese clashed with ABC News Breakfast presenters live on air after being questioned over an undeclared honorary membership at Marrickville Golf Club, a club in his Sydney electorate that recently received a A$6million grant through an invite-only federal scheme. Albanese insisted the honorary membership, granted around 15 years ago, was never disclosed because he holds no card and rarely visits the club, accusing the ABC of failing to provide full context and repeatedly telling the broadcaster it "should do better". The exchange matters because it feeds into wider allegations that the Albanese government has used a federal grants programme to disproportionately benefit its own electorates.

The grant to Marrickville Golf Club forms part of the half-billion-dollar Major and Local Community Infrastructure Program, under which recipients could only apply after receiving an invitation, with no competitive process against rival bids. The Centre for Public Integrity found Labor-held seats received almost three-quarters of the A$560million allocated, with marginal or competitive seats receiving A$66.5million more than a proportional share would suggest; centre chair Anthony Whealy said this raised serious concerns about whether merit or political advantage drove funding decisions. Other grants cited include A$16million for a swimming pool in Bega, in the Labor-held bellwether seat of Eden-Monaro. During the same interview, Albanese also pushed back on ABC questioning over ongoing treaty negotiations with the Solomon Islands, saying he negotiates directly with foreign leaders rather than "on the ABC".
