HBO is developing a miniseries remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s horror film *The Birds*, with Emmy-winning actor Sarah Snook set to star. The project gives the classic story a new television adaptation and has been in development in different forms for several years.

Snook will play Myra Massey, who returns to her Alaskan hometown with her young daughter to look into an old friend’s disappearance. As she investigates, the town faces mysterious, possibly supernatural attacks by birds. Snook will also executive produce with Tom Spezialy and David Heyman.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

A remake could bring the story to viewers who might not watch the original and use a longer format to develop its characters, setting and mystery. Sarah Snook’s involvement and the new Alaskan storyline may offer a fresh interpretation while keeping the film’s central sense of menace.

The case against

The original’s power rests partly on its distinctive, unsettling ambiguity, and expanding it into a miniseries could explain away what made the film so haunting. A remake also risks trading on a celebrated work’s reputation without matching its craft or adding enough to justify revisiting it.
