Amazon makes vague commitment to unproven nuclear tech to power Indiana datacenters
Amazon is funding the development of a nuclear power plant in Sullivan County, Indiana, to supply electricity to its datacentres. The project would use a technology that has not yet produced a working reactor in the US, making its proposed schedule uncertain.
X-energy says the plant would comprise 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors and provide 960 megawatts of grid-connected power, with Amazon as its first purchaser. An X-energy representative said it could be completed as early as the mid-2030s, but the timeline may change. The company has not built a working reactor, and its expected construction permit for a separate Texas project would not cover the Indiana site.

- The 12 reactors would provide 960 megawatts.
- X-energy has yet to build a working reactor.
