HBO Max has decided not to take cop drama pilot ‘American Blue’, starring Milo Ventimiglia, forward to a full series. The decision matters because the project had been developed as part of the streamer’s attempt to create lower-cost, annual-returning drama series, following the model of ‘The Pitt’.

Ventimiglia played Brian “Milk” Milkovich, who returns to Joliet, Illinois, to help its struggling police force while seeking personal redemption. The pilot was written by Jeremy Carver and directed by David Ayer; its ensemble included Kelly Jenrette, Rich Sommer and Jesse Garcia. Warner Bros. Television is reportedly seeking another outlet for the pilot, while HBO Max’s other newly commissioned drama pilot, ‘How to Survive Without Me’, is said to have stronger prospects for a series order.
