Wyoming is positioning itself to attract billions of dollars in artificial intelligence data centre investment as other US states grow wary of the industry's demands on electricity, water and local tax systems. With plentiful land, affordable energy, a business-friendly regulatory climate and existing high-capacity fibre along major interstate routes, the state has many of the attributes developers seek, potentially giving it an edge as other jurisdictions impose new taxes, restrictions or moratoriums on construction.

Tax Foundation vice president Jared Walczak argues the facilities could bring substantial property tax relief to Wyoming homeowners, citing Loudoun County, Virginia, where data centres supply roughly 45% of local tax revenue and save the average homeowner an estimated $5,800 a year. Wyoming is not immune to the same tensions seen elsewhere, however: Cheyenne officials rejected a proposed one-year moratorium on new data centres in May after public debate over electricity rates and water use, and lawmakers have considered reclassifying the facilities as industrial property to raise their tax assessments. The broader question, Walczak notes, is whether operators cover the cost of additional power generation and transmission themselves, or whether those costs fall on residents.
