Explained simply
Archaeologists study human history through objects and remains found at sites such as ancient settlements. Excavations are usually carried out by teams, and a discovery can raise questions about how it should be recorded and who gets recognition for the work.
Dig is a comedy set at a Greek excavation, where archaeologist Elise leads a crew that includes younger colleagues and students. The story draws on Kate Myers’ novel Excavations and features Hugh Laurie as Neville, a senior archaeologist reluctant to retire.
An artefact is an object made or used by people in the past, and rare finds can offer clues about how people lived. Decisions about documenting and crediting a discovery matter to the researchers involved, as well as to the historical record.
