“An outright ban will not eliminate AI from the modding process,” Nexus Mods say as they rule out barring generated creations from their site
Nexus Mods has ruled out banning AI-generated mods, saying an outright prohibition would be hard to enforce because AI is used across many stages of mod creation. The platform says clearer disclosure will let users decide what they download while allowing it to set rules for AI use.
New uploads must disclose AI use, and mods marked as AI-assisted will need a public explanation of how and where AI was used; AI tags will also be more prominent. Nexus is developing permissions for AI use, training and derivative works, and says it will not use mods to train AI or license them for that purpose. Creators have until 2 January to bring existing mods into line, while the site plans to strengthen moderation and security against malicious code.
In short
- Nexus Mods will not ban AI-generated creations.
- New uploads must disclose AI use, with explanations for AI-assisted mods.
- Existing mods have until 2 January to meet the new rules.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A ban could be difficult to define and enforce because AI may contribute to many parts of making a mod, including work that is hard to distinguish from conventional tools. Requiring disclosure and clearer permissions instead could give users informed choice, protect creators’ control over training and derivative use, and leave room for useful AI-assisted work while the platform targets security risks.
The case against
Allowing AI-generated mods on the platform may make it harder for users to assess originality, provenance and the rights behind a creation, even when disclosure is required. A ban could offer a clearer standard and reduce the risk that creators’ work is used without consent, while avoiding reliance on disclosures and moderation that may be incomplete or difficult to verify.
