A Pennsylvania state representative has asked President Donald Trump to rename Lake Erie as "Lake Pennsylvania," arguing the lake is central to the state's economy and identity as its only Great Lake. The request follows Trump's recent executive order renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America," a move made amid escalating trade tensions with Canada and one that drew condemnation from Canadian officials, including Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Representative David Maloney contends Ohio has "plenty of shoreline" and New York already holds two Great Lakes, so Pennsylvania deserves naming rights instead. In reality, Pennsylvania has only about 75 miles of Lake Erie shoreline, similar to New York, while Ohio holds 316 miles and Michigan the smallest share at 32.5 miles; Canada owns roughly half the lake via Ontario. Any presidential renaming would only apply at federal level and would not bind Canada or individual states, which can choose not to adopt it. Trump has also floated renaming New Mexico to "New America," prompting objections from Democratic lawmakers there.
