Anthony Albanese accepted the Atlantic Council’s Global Citizen Award at a ceremony in New York, recognising his efforts to strengthen international alliances, advance AUKUS and promote Indo-Pacific stability. The honour attracted criticism in Australia, particularly after journalist Latika Bourke questioned whether he deserved it amid controversy over the government’s response to the Bondi Beach terror attack and falling opinion-poll support.

In his speech, Albanese argued that the post-Second World War international order was no longer adequate for current geopolitical challenges, calling for stronger partnerships and greater resilience. Other recipients included Finnish President Alexander Stubb, actress Cynthia Erivo and Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali; Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape praised Albanese as a trusted partner and friend.
