Albanese defends Caribbean trip as he joins King Charles for conservation launch
Anthony Albanese defended his trip to Antigua and Barbuda, saying international diplomacy and trade engagement can strengthen Australia’s economy and living standards. During the Commonwealth leaders’ meeting, he joined King Charles and mining billionaire Andrew Forrest aboard Forrest’s Green Pioneer for the launch of a conservation initiative.
The initiative announced a $288 million pledge to help Commonwealth countries protect 30 per cent of their land and oceans by 2030. Albanese said conflicts and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz were adding to global inflationary pressures, but rejected claims that his trip was mainly about securing Australia a temporary seat on the UN Security Council.
In short
- Albanese says overseas engagement serves Australia’s interests.
- A $288 million Commonwealth conservation pledge was announced.
