Anthropic files for listing on US stock market with valuation of more than $1.5tn

The Guardian ·

Anthropic has publicly filed for a US stock market listing that could become one of the largest debuts in the country’s history. The company, which makes the Claude chatbot, is valued by analysts and investors at more than $1.5tn; its flotation will put the financial strength of the AI boom under close scrutiny.

The prospectus reports revenue rising from $41m in 2023 to $4.585bn in 2025, then reaching $16.286bn in the first half of 2026, alongside a net loss of $80bn for that period. Anthropic says it had more than 14,000 business customers by 30 September, but a quarter of its revenue came from its five largest customers. It also disclosed $6.2bn in debt and warned of risks including customer concentration, high computing costs and misuse of its AI models.

In short

  • Anthropic is seeking a US listing at a valuation above $1.5tn.
  • Revenue reached $16.286bn in the first half of 2026.
  • The company reported an $80bn half-year net loss.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

A listing could give investors a chance to participate in a company whose reported revenue has grown rapidly and whose products have attracted substantial business demand. Public-market scrutiny may also improve transparency around its losses, debt, customer concentration and computing costs, while raising capital could fund further development and help meet demand for AI services.

The case against

The proposed valuation may be difficult to justify when set against the reported $80bn first-half loss, significant debt and dependence on a small group of large customers. Investors could be exposed to uncertainty over whether revenue growth can continue, whether computing costs can be controlled and how misuse risks may affect the business, making the flotation a test of whether AI expectations have outrun sustainable earnings.

Explained simply

Anthropic is a US technology company that develops artificial intelligence systems, including Claude, a chatbot that can answer questions and help with work. It sells access to its models to businesses as well as individual users, and competes with companies such as OpenAI and Google.

A stock market listing allows a company to sell shares to the public, giving it access to investment while requiring it to disclose more about its finances and risks. Investors will weigh Anthropic’s rapid revenue growth against its reported losses, debts, computing costs and reliance on a small number of large customers.

The proposed listing also offers a test of how much investors are willing to pay for companies developing AI. Its outcome could influence expectations for other technology firms seeking funding to expand their AI businesses.
