New iMac gains speed and wireless upgrades but keeps dated design and higher price
The iMac M6 is faster than its predecessor, but its unchanged design and 24-inch screen make it feel dated, while its higher starting price weakens its appeal. The reviewer says it remains a capable computer for home and business users, though many buyers may get better value from a Mac mini paired with a larger monitor.
The new chip brings a reported 20 per cent rise in CPU benchmark results and more than doubles the GPU score in one test; memory bandwidth rises to 170GB/s. The iMac also adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, but retains the 4.5K display and offers only 16GB to 32GB of memory. It starts at $1,499, $200 more than the previous model.
In short
- M6 boosts performance, especially graphics.
- The 24-inch design remains unchanged.
- Starting price rises by $200.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The M6 iMac offers meaningful performance gains, faster wireless standards and a sharp 4.5K display in a convenient all-in-one package. For home and business users who value simplicity, a tidy desk and a capable computer ready to use out of the box, the higher price may be justified despite the familiar design and limited memory options.
The case against
The unchanged 24-inch design, capped memory and $200 price increase make the upgrade harder to recommend, especially when the display itself has not improved. Buyers who do not need an all-in-one may get more screen space and better value from a Mac mini with a separate monitor.
