Apple’s new Find My-compatible remote will also work with your old Apple TV

The Verge ·

Apple’s new Siri Remote adds Find My support and a built-in speaker, and can be bought separately for $59. It works with every Apple TV model back to Apple TV HD, so owners do not need to buy the new Apple TV 4K to use it.

Find My can help locate the remote, but precise distance tracking requires an iPhone Duo, iPhone Air or iPhone 17 or later, excluding iPhone 17e, with the latest iOS software. The feature uses Bluetooth channel sounding through Apple’s N1 chip; the remote ships on 13 November. A built-in microphone and surround sound with paired HomePod speakers remain limited to the new Apple TV 4K.

Apple TV is Apple’s streaming device, which connects to a television and runs apps for films, programmes and other services. The Siri Remote controls it and can also be used to speak to Siri.

Apple’s Find My service helps people locate compatible devices and accessories, usually through an iPhone. The new remote adds a speaker to help users find it, and is compatible with Apple TV HD and later models, so an older Apple TV can use it. Precise distance tracking depends on having a supported iPhone and up-to-date software.

Some features are tied to the latest Apple TV 4K rather than the remote itself. These include a built-in microphone and surround sound when paired with HomePod speakers.
