Argentina overpower Wales in Nations Championship

BBC Sport · 1 month ago

Argentina beat Wales 35-21 in the Nations Championship in San Juan, running in five tries to bounce back from their opening defeat by Scotland. The result was a reality check for Steve Tandy's Wales, who had arrived on the back of consecutive Test wins over Italy and Fiji — their first back-to-back victories since 2023 — but were outclassed by a Pumas side ranked seventh in the world, four places above them.

Number eight Joaquin Oviedo scored twice, with further tries from Justo Piccardo, Marcos Kremer and Santiago Carreras, while fly-half Tomas Albornoz kicked five conversions. Wales made a bright start through a driven try from captain Dewi Lake, who later limped off injured, and added scores through Rhys Carre and Ben Warren, with Sam Costelow converting three; a Jac Morgan try was ruled out by the TMO. Wales next travel to face world champions South Africa in Durban, while Argentina host England.
