As Peak gets its final big update, developers Landfall and Aggro Crab explain why it isn’t a “forever game”

Rock Paper Shotgun · 2 hours ago

Landfall and Aggro Crab have released The Final Ascent, described as the last major content update for their hit co-op climbing game Peak. The developers say they always intended the game to be "finished" at launch rather than a live-service title, and don't want it to become a "forever game" bloated with endless additions purely to hold players' attention. With Peak's development split across two studios, both teams say they now want to return to their own separate projects.

The update adds two new variant biomes, the foggy, tree-filled Gloom and the trap-laden castle area The Citadel, alongside a secret eighth ascent and a new "clown luggage" type packed with items such as a lollipop, cannon and balloon bunch, which replace some existing climber luggage contents. New items include a jetpack, a warp fungus and a glider, plus mysterious statues scattered across the island hinting at a connection to the Scoutmaster's lost troop. The developers acknowledged Peak's "overwhelming success" meant they'd already spent longer on it than planned, but framed this as the natural conclusion to a finished game rather than an ongoing service.

  • Peak's final major update, The Final Ascent, is now live.
  • Adds two biomes, new items, secret ascent and lore statues.
  • Developers say Peak was never meant to be a live-service "forever game".
