As Swiss Films Expand International Reach, English-language Works Are on the Rise

Variety · 4 hours ago

Swiss cinema is enjoying growing international visibility, with a strong presence of Swiss films and co-productions at the 2026 Venice Film Festival and its Venice Production Bridge industry strand. Nicola Ruffo, director of promotional body Swiss Films, says the combination of domestic appeal and global reach is notable for such a small, multilingual market, pointing to a wider trend of English-language and internationally co-produced Swiss work finding audiences both at home and abroad.

Seven Swiss projects are taking part in Venice's Gap-Financing Market and two in its Immersive Market this year. Petra Volpe's "Late Shift" is cited as a standout success, selling more than 670,000 tickets outside Switzerland by the end of 2025. Notable titles at this year's festival include Pauline Julier and Nicolas Chapoulier's "The Indies" in Giornate degli Autori, Wim Wenders' documentary on architect Peter Zumthor, Ali Asgari's "A Bit of Light" (co-produced by Geneva's Sunny Independent Pictures), and Gilles Jobin's "Sunset Motel" in the Immersive competition, alongside upcoming projects from both emerging and established filmmakers such as Ursula Meier and Kaveh Bakhtiari.
