Gravity Linux, a Fedora-based Asahi Linux fork, has released an experimental alpha that boots an accelerated Linux desktop on Apple’s M4 Mac mini. The project’s rapid progress highlights a policy split over the use of large language models (LLMs), while giving developers an alternative route for running Linux on newer Apple Silicon hardware.

The M4 release supports GPU acceleration through OpenGL ES 3.0 and OpenGL 3.3, and HDMI output works, but USB-C displays, USB4, Thunderbolt, suspend and complete power management remain unsupported. Developers Cody Ho and Niklas Sheth say LLM-assisted, largely unattended development helped them build the M4 GPU driver in about a month; Gravity permits this approach under a clean-room policy, whereas Asahi broadly prohibits generative AI for substantial contributions.
