An Australian father, Daniel Kuzeff, fears he will be separated from his six-year-old son Thanasi unless the boy's Kenyan mother, Leah Wambui Sore, is granted permission to remain in Australia. Although Thanasi is an Australian citizen through his father, the family says he would likely have to leave with his mother if her visa is not extended, highlighting how strict and slow Australian visa processes can disrupt families where parents live in different countries.

Thanasi moved to Australia with his father in 2024 and was separated from his mother for more than a year while she had five visa applications rejected, before finally being granted a visitor visa in January this year after the Administrative Review Tribunal intervened. She had applied for a Subclass 143 Contributory Parent Visa, which carries a 15-year waiting list, and her current visitor visa includes a "no further stay" condition meaning she must leave by 1 December. Mr Kuzeff has appealed to Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke to intervene, saying the family has "reached a dead end" after repeated rejections, while both parents say they simply want Thanasi to grow up with both of them in his life.
