Aussie teacher is jailed after secretly taking photos of uniformed schoolgirls and using AI to generate nude images

Daily Mail ·

A Queensland teacher has been jailed for six years after secretly photographing schoolgirls and using artificial intelligence to create nude images of them, which he shared online. The case matters because he exploited children’s images and his position of trust, causing lasting harm to victims.

Christopher Gerald Savage, 38, pleaded guilty to 31 child abuse-related offences and had more than 53,000 images and videos on eight devices. Police identified over 20 victims aged 12 to 17; Savage traded the fabricated images with 13 Telegram users for more than 1,100 other child abuse images. He was arrested in September 2024 and will be eligible for parole in early 2029; his teaching registration remains suspended.

Teachers are trusted to look after pupils and help keep them safe. In Australia, schools have rules to protect children’s privacy, and taking or sharing sexual images of anyone under 18 is a serious criminal matter.

Artificial intelligence can be used to alter real photographs or make fabricated images, but the result can still expose and harm the child whose image was used. Sharing such material online can spread it beyond the original audience and make it difficult to remove.

The case involves the use of pupils’ images by someone in a position of trust, as well as the exchange of child abuse material online. It raises questions about children’s safety, the misuse of AI and how schools and authorities respond to abuse.
