‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Directors’ Failed Spy Thriller Franchise Officially Returns in 2027

Collider ·

Netflix’s plans to build a film franchise around Mark Greaney’s *The Gray Man* have stalled after the 2022 adaptation received poor reviews and its sequel faced repeated delays. The book series continues, however, with its 16th instalment, *Dark Union*, scheduled for publication in 2027.

Berkley will publish *Dark Union* on 16 February 2027, nearly a year after the 15th novel, *The Hard Line*, reached No. 3 on the *New York Times* bestseller list. The new story follows assassin Courtland Gentry as he investigates the unexpected return of his brother, a police officer believed to have died in the line of duty nine years earlier.

In short

  • *The Gray Man* book series continues despite stalled film plans.
  • *Dark Union* is due on 16 February 2027.
  • Court investigates how his supposedly dead brother survived.

Explained simply

The Gray Man is an action-thriller series by American author Mark Greaney, centred on Courtland Gentry, a former CIA operative who works as a freelance assassin. The books follow his missions and the people connected to his past.

Netflix adapted the first novel as a film in 2022, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who also directed Avengers films. The film received poor reviews, and plans for a screen sequel have been delayed.

The novels have continued separately from the film plans, with Dark Union set to be the series’ 16th book. Its story centres on Gentry investigating the return of his brother, a police officer thought to have died nine years earlier.
