Sue Storm's line that Doom "used to be different" before "everything he loved was taken from him" has led fans to connect the artwork to his comic-book backstory involving his late mother, suggesting his grand scheme may be rooted in personal tragedy rather than simple villainy.

In the comics, Victor Von Doom's mother Cynthia struck a deal with the demon Mephisto to protect her people, only to die in battle and have her soul dragged to Hell; Victor's failed attempt to rescue her using magic and technology left him scarred and led to his iconic armour. Fans theorise Doom may be seeking to remake reality so Cynthia can finally be freed, which would also explain his accusation that the Avengers have "lived stolen lives" following the events of "Avengers: Endgame".
