Barcelona sign Brazil forward Kerolin from Manchester City for club-record £1.25m

The Guardian ·

Barcelona have signed Brazil forward Kerolin from Manchester City for a fee reported to be around £1.25m, the largest sum ever received by a Women's Super League club for a player sale. The deal underlines Barcelona's continued spending power in the women's game even as the reigning European champions bid farewell to several established stars this summer, while for City it marks another shift in a squad already reshaped by the arrival of Beth Mead.

Kerolin, 26, spent 18 months at City after joining from North Carolina Courage in January 2025, helping the club win the WSL title and the Women's FA Cup last season. The fee exceeds the £1m Liverpool received from Arsenal for Olivia Smith in 2025 and the £850,000 Manchester United got from Chelsea for Melvine Malard, and is also a club-record purchase for Barcelona, who have lost Alexia Putellas, Mapi León, Ona Batlle and Salma Paralluelo this summer. Barcelona see Kerolin, prized for her pace and dribbling, as a player who can become a regular goalscorer in the Champions League.

Women’s football clubs can agree transfer fees to sign players from one another, with the buying club paying the selling club. Manchester City and Barcelona both compete at the top level in Europe, while the Women’s Super League is England’s leading women’s league and the Champions League is Europe’s main club competition.

Kerolin is a Brazil international who joined City from North Carolina Courage in the United States in 2025. She helped City win the English league and cup, and is known for her pace and dribbling.

Barcelona have been rebuilding after several established players left this summer. The transfer matters to both clubs: Barcelona are adding a forward they hope can contribute goals in Europe, while City lose a player from a squad that has already changed.
